Post Treatment Care
What should you be doing after you've been discharged by your Physiotherapist?

Question time: Do you brush your teeth only once every 4 months after seeing your dentist?
Gosh, I hope not.
So why do so many people stop looking after their bodies after they see their Physio?
The role of your physiotherapist is to:
- Relieve your pain, especially in the acute stages.
- Help you restore movement & function.
- Give you the tools to maintain improved physical conditioning.
Here are some suggestions on how to maintain your progress:
Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated can help reduce muscle fatigue and reduce the risk of injury. Water is what helps thin the blood and move nutrients and oxygen through the body. That's why it's crucial to drink a lot of water after an injury or surgery, so that these cell-repairing nutrients can be easily brought to the recovering area.
Follow any advice we have given you
The Physio's professional advice is generally given to expediate the recovery time frames and to avoid exacerbation of your injury.
Eg.
- Use hot/cold packs where required.
- Follow-up with your GP or surgeon
- Continuing wearing a brace.
Can't remember what they said, ask them to write it down again for you.
Rest and recovery
It's such an important step to allow your body to adequately rest at night time.
As we sleep, muscles and tissues rejuvenate and repair. This is possible due to increased blood flow in our bodies. This increased blood flow brings along oxygen and nutrients that help recover and repair muscles and regenerate cells.
Do your homework & stay active
Exercise & stretching is a fundamental part of your rehab. Statistically, patients who adhere to their at home exercise program are more likely to achieve their goals and maintain strength and physical function. By continuing your program you reduce the risk of re-injury or unnecessary flare-ups.
Be strict with yourself and set aside time to GET IT DONE ;)
If you need your exercise program updated, follow-up with your Physio. One session a month is way better than seeing your physio multiple times a week for an injury.
